Case study 1: Creating cloaked websites in order to disseminate fake news

In August 2017 Russian tabloids disseminated non-existent "interview" with former chief of the British Secret Intelligence Service John Scarlett. Disinformation claimed that
in his interview with The Guardian, John Scarlett, former Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS, also commonly known as MI6), allegedly disclosed a three-stage strategic plan of the United States and the Great Britain aimed at Russia’s fragmentation.

As a result of verification by BBC Russian Service, it was revealed that the material was disseminated by a fake website, imitating the British Guardian. The "interview" was also faked. The specially created website was visually identical to the British Guardian’s website with only one difference in its URL, where a letter “ı” was used instead of Latin “i”.
