COLD WAR GAMES

Cold War Games was developed by the Media Development Foundation (MDF) and the Soviet Past Research Laboratory (Sovlab). Drawing on case-based learning methodology, the game examines historical and contemporary propaganda narratives disseminated by the Soviet Union against NATO — equipping players with the critical thinking skills needed to recognize and counter manipulative tactics in today's media environment. The game serves as a hands-on teaching resource, actively used by educators in classroom settings.
The project began with a rigorous research phase in which specialists from MDF and Sovlab identified and analyzed key aspects of Cold War-era propaganda, disinformation tactics, and active measures directed at NATO. This foundational work informed the game's content, question design, mechanics, and the educational brochure included in the kit. The visual identity was thoughtfully crafted to reflect the aesthetic and atmosphere of the Cold War period.
The game features over 60 questions organized across five thematic categories - Active Measures, Propaganda, Fact-Checking, Identify the Spy, and History of NATO - grounded in extensive research on Soviet disinformation campaigns and influence operations.
Each board game kit includes a comprehensive supplementary educational guide providing players and educators with contextual background, source materials, and facilitation support - ensuring the game delivers meaningful, curriculum-aligned learning outcomes.
